Abstract

Tracking every container ship for five years, we introduce a highly dimensional data set for the analysis of trade costs. We recreate the exact movement profile of ships using advanced shortest-path algorithms in order to provide information on port-pair trade characteristics such as distance, speed, ship specifications, port call patterns and dozens more economically meaningful variables. We use both the data and a model to explain shipping firm behavior, thereby explaining trade costs such as time in transit in a micro-founded setting. In an application, we measure the effects of oil prices on time in transit.
