After studying at Oxford and Princeton, Snower earned his Ph.D. at Princeton and, after an assistant professorship at the University of Maryland, became a lecturer and later professor at Birkbeck College, University of London. In 2004, he accepted the call to the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and succeeded Horst Siebert as President of the Kiel Institute.
Snower aligned the institute's structure and research agenda with the socio-political responsibility of research and the cross-linking of economic research and consulting with other scientific disciplines. Under his leadership, the institute's international network gained in importance alongside the institute's location. He placed priority on transdisciplinary research excellence. Snower created new events and formats that strengthened the Institute's consulting services and networking, such as the Global Economy Prize, the Global Economic Symposium, the Global Solutions Summit or the Kiel Summer School. He also strengthened the Institute's ties to the university with joint appointments.
After his retirement, Snower remained connected to the Kiel Institute primarily through the Global Solutions Summit. He is also a professor at the Hertie School in Berlin, teaches at the University of Oxford and is a fellow of the Brookings Institution and the Blavatnik School of Government.
