The Corona Crisis
Cargo traffic in the Red Sea
Due to the particular geographic location of the Red Sea, shipping here reflects trade activity between Europe and Asia. In addition to the number of container ships, their draught, i.e. utilization, is also measured. The expected value is calculated from the average of 2017 to 2019, scaled to 2020 and 2021 using past growth rates. The data show the significant drop in cargo traffic following the global outbreak of the Corona pandemic last spring. During 2020, global trade recovered.
Our Corona Crisis data monitor shows continuously updated indicators that allow conclusions to be drawn about economic activity in Germany and Europe and the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
