Sonja Peterson studied Mathematical Economics at the University of Hamburg and - with the support of a Fulbright scholarship - Economics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA. She obtained her doctoral degree within the DFG graduate school on “Integrated Environmental Evaluation” at Kiel University in 2002. Since 2002 she is a research associate at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy where she headed the former Research Area “The Environment and Natural Resources” from 2006 – 2010. She then partly moved to the management of the IfW where she occupied different positions. Currently she is head of the Service unit “Research Coordination & Outreach”. Since 2017 she also holds a honorary professorship at Kiel University. For almost 20 years the research and think tank activities of Sonja Peterson focus especially on European and international climate policy including topics such as allocation effects and efficiency of the EU emissions trading system (EU ETS), burden sharing in international climate policy, involvement of China and India in an international climate regime, border carbon adjustment and the determinants of EU-ETS allowance prices. Methodologically, she is an expert in Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling and is since 2001 working with the CGE model DART which she is subsequently extending and updating.
