Trading through times of disintegration: How services help firms weather shocks — Holger Görg

Abstract
We study how German firms adjusted goods and services exports in response to a major disintegration announcement, using the Brexit referendum as a natural experiment. To do so we use a novel dataset combining monthly micro data on international trade in goods and services at the firm-country-product / service type level. We use difference-in-differences regressions to investigate the heterogeneous reaction of dual traders vs. pure goods and services exporters. We rationalize our findings within a theoretical framework exploring how dual exporters of goods and services react to a shock under the assumption of one-way complementarity between goods and services.
