The paper discusses medium term challenges for the Chinese economy and compares current policies with alternative options. It focuses on tradeoffs between pre-pandemic objectives to stimulate domestic demand in a serve-oriented economy and post-pandemic actions pointing to the return to export orientation. Alternatives are offered to return to the pre-pandemic strategy which are also seen as a way to minimize the costs of aging in China.
