Since the 1990s, deindustrialization has been observed not only in Germany as a whole, but also in Schleswig-Holstein, which has been accompanied by shrinking shares of value added and employment in the manufacturing sector. However, the job losses in Schleswig-Holstein's manufacturing industry have been more than offset by employment growth in the service sectors. Moreover, structural change in industry has led to the outsourcing of industry-related services, which overstated job losses in industry. Traditionally, food and animal feed production and mechanical engineering are the heavyweights of Schleswig-Holstein's industry.
