T20 Present Proposals for G20 to German Government

International think tanks in the Think 20 group (T20) today presented twenty policy proposals for the twenty largest industrialized and emerging countries (G20) to German Chancellery Minister Peter Altmaier. Unveiled at the T20’s Global Solutions Summit in Berlin, the document “20 Solution Proposals for the G20” contains recommendations about dealing with global challenges like climate change, inequality, and digitalization. The T20 called on the G20 to follow up on the proposals by agreeing concrete steps for implementation.

The document was presented by the T20 chairmen Dennis J. Snower, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), and Dirk Messner, Director of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE). The T20 is a group of think tanks from the G20 countries that gives research-based policy recommendations to G20 decision-makers. The twenty policy recommendations are based on the work of more than 300 scientists from renowned research institutes and think tanks, who worked in twelve taskforces to develop recommendations for policymaking in various areas.

The twenty recommendations deal with the following policy areas:

  • Digitalization
  • Building a stable, sustainable, and resilient global economy
  • Climate policy and finance
  • Fighting hunger, reducing inequalities, managing forced migration
  •  The 2030 Agenda—a universal framework for human development and shared prosperity.

Among other things, the T20 called on the G20 to collaborate on employment and education policies for the digital age, to promote the leveraging of market forces to support low-carbon growth, and to initiate a paradigm shift in the relationship between the G20 and Africa by considering a full and permanent seat for the African Union Commission in the G20 and its work streams.

The two-day T20 Summit "Global Solutions", which will end this evening, saw more than 800 participants from politics, business, academia, and civil society discuss the policy proposals drawn up by the taskforces. Next to Mr. Altmaier, attendees included EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger, German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks, Deutsche Post DHL CEO Frank Appel, Boeing European President Sir Michael Arthur, and economics laureates such as George Akerlof and Edmund Phelps.
