Moritz Schularick appointed new president of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy

Professor Simone Fulda, President of CAU, was very pleased with the decision: "Moritz Schularick has written groundbreaking work on the causes and consequences of international financial crises, but he has also worked on economic inequality and populism as well as questions of monetary macroeconomics and U.S.-Chinese economic relations. In 2022, he was awarded Germany's most prestigious research prize, the Leibniz Prize, for his research. He also provides highly relevant transfer in politics and economics, most recently, for example, in the debate on Germany's dependence on Russian gas. We are certain that he will be an outstanding addition to our university and will strengthen Kiel as an excellent location for economic research, teaching, and knowledge transfer in the long term."

Elga Bartsch, Head of Department at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, who is responsible for the Leibniz economic research institutions, commented on behalf of the German government: "I welcome the fact that Moritz Schularick, an excellent and experienced researcher, has been recruited to head the Kiel Institute and that he will further enhance the scientific profile and visibility of the Institute. I regard Mr. Schularick as one of the most renowned German academics in the field of international financial market research. State Secretary Guido Wendt, who chairs the Kiel Institute's Foundation Board, added: "Professor Schularick is taking over the presidency of the IfW at a time of global economic upheaval. About Moritz Schularick

Moritz Schularick, born in 1975, is Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Bonn, Director of the MacroFinance Lab there, and Professor at Sciences Po (Paris). He is also a member of the ECONtribute cluster of excellence and a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Academia Europea. Previously, he conducted research at New York University, the University of Cambridge, Freie Universität Berlin, and in the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, among others. He is a recipient of the 2022 Leibniz Prize, Germany's most prestigious research prize, awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2018, he received the Gossen Prize of the Verein für Socialpolitik, the most prestigious award given to German economists. He is editor of the most important European journal for economic policy, "Economic Policy." His research includes financial markets and asset prices, issues in monetary macroeconomics, and the causes of financial crises and economic inequality. He regularly advises central banks, ministries of finance, investors, and international organizations.

About the Kiel Institute

The Kiel Institute for the World Economy sees itself as the research institute in Germany for globalization issues. Its researchers investigate the drivers and effects of international economic activity, the integration and disintegration of global markets as well as the opportunities and limits of political action in open economies. The Institute’s declared aim is to identify emerging global economic challenges and develop practical solutions that are compatible with open markets and competition while also taking into account the living standards of all.
The Kiel Institute has approximately 170 staff, including 100 academics. The annual budget is around EUR 15.5 million (2022). The core funding for the Institute comes from the German federal government and the State of Schleswig-Holstein. In addition, the Institute raises third-party funding for research and other projects.
Professors Holger Görg and Stefan Kooths have been serving as acting heads of research at the Kiel Institute since December 1, 2021, and, together with Administrative Director Birgit Austen-Bosy, constitute the Institute’s three-member Board of Directors. The Institute’s previous president, Professor Gabriel Felbermayr, relinquished the position on September 30, 2021, in order to become director of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) in Vienna.
