Kiel Institute Junior Researchers Sonali Chowdhry and Jan Krause Invited to Lindau
Sonali Chowdhry and Jan Krause, both junior researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, were selected as one of 373 Young Economists from 60 countries to participate in the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences. The prestigious Meeting, scheduled for this summer, was postponed to 2021, due to the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The invited young economists will also be able to participate in the Online Science Days 2020 and the Online Sciathon taking place this summer.
On receiving an invitation to participate in the Lindau Meeting, Chowdhry says, “I’m delighted with this rare opportunity to connect with other young economists around the world, critically engage with Nobel Laureates and exchange ideas for pushing the discipline forward. I’m looking forward to sharing my research findings and discussing the big, urgent questions in trade, inequality and sustainable development.” Chowdhry, who is also a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow with the EU Trade and Investment Policy ITN and a recipient of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, joined the Kiel Institute in 2019 and works in the Trade Policy Task Force led by Kiel Institute president Gabriel Felbermayr. Jan Krause, who studied mathematics, economics and psychology at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, has been at the Kiel Institute since spring 2018. His research interests include Behavioral Economics and Finance as well as Mathematical Economics.
Chowdhry’s doctoral research lies at the intersection of international trade and the micro-foundations of productivity growth. It examines different modes of firm participation in foreign markets and the heterogeneous effects of globalization across and within firms. Chowdhry is also an active contributor to contemporary policy discussions on trade issues. Her most recent work spans the US-China trade conflict, the impact of Brexit on India, the US-Japan Phase I trade deal and gains from the deep and comprehensive EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement. Her research has been reported on by The New York Times, Reuters, Bloomberg, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit and Deutsche Welle.
Jan Krause is currently working on behavioral economic models and economic experiments on behavior in global markets. In particular, his research deals with the study of ethical behavior in global supply chains and the analysis of a responsible and coordinated approach to risk in financial markets.
About the Lindau-Meeting
Since 1951 around 30-40 Nobel Laureates convene once a year in Lindau to meet the next generation of leading scientists. The meetings focus alternately on the three natural science Nobel Prize disciplines. An interdisciplinary meeting revolving around all three natural sciences is held every five years. In addition, the Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences is held every three years.
The recently invited and notified 373 Young Economists around the globe have successfully completed a multi-stage selection process. The application process involved 144 academic partners of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and – for the German universities in the field of economics – the “Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliche Fakultätentag” (WISOFT – Association of Economics and Social Sciences Faculties).
Due to the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences and the interdisciplinary 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, also planned for this summer, were postponed to 2021. The Young Economists will meet Laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in August 2021. Already this year they will be able to participate in the Online Science Days 2020 and the Online Sciathon.
In an earlier version of this news there was unfortunately no information that Jan Krause was also invited to Lindau. We apologize for this and we are of course equally happy with both invitees.
