About 150 participants from academia, politics, society and business wrapped up the second funding phase at the conference. It was the first meeting in a long time to present and discuss the results of the research conducted by the 29 project consortia. A varied program in the tradition of the Forum Climate Economics series led through the two days and provided an opportunity for exchange on climate policy challenges in the context of the current global political situation and on the longer-term tasks for climate economics research in the societal transformation process.

As part of their efforts to mitigate climate change, more and more governmental and non-governmental actors have recently been looking at the potential role of financial and capital markets. Numerous countries, including Germany, have presented national sustainable finance strategies and the European Union is about to adopt a classification system for sustainable investments, the EU taxonomy. All these projects ascribe a central role to the financial sector in the transition toward a net-zero economy. But what is the relationship between the financial market policy measures contained in them and climate policy measures already taken, such as the European Emissions Trading System? To what extent are these fields of action interlinked?

What role can and should private and public actors play in insuring against climate risks? How do insurance policies provide incentives for the private sector to adapt to climate change? Are insurance solutions socially just? These questions surrounding the topic of insurance against extreme weather events as an option for adapting to climate change were discussed at Forum Climate Economics 10 on November 22, 2021.

The new U.S. Administration’s return to the table has put the multilateral climate protection process of the Paris Agreement back on the international agenda, but lower-income countries and fossil-resource rich countries are often overlooked. But these two groups of countries are facing particular challenges and obstacles.

The need for information on the carbon footprint of products is steadily increasing in light of tighter climate targets. The Forum Climate Economics 8 discussed the necessity, availability and impact of information for an effective climate policy. Based on this, requirements for legal regulations, such as in a supply chain law, and recommendations for their implementation can also be derived.

The 7th Forum Climate Economics will discuss the need of an extensive fossil fuel phase-out in order to reach the climate targets of the Paris Agreement. In exchange with renowned guests we want your input to develop a goal-oriented package of measures for a sustainable and just transition process for the fossil-fuel phase out. The 7th Forum Climate Economics can be watched online via live-stream or for a limited number of participants live – in compliance to the standing hygiene and distancing rules.

More than one hundred guests discussed the political and social implications of the German Climate Protection Programme. The 6th Klimaforum titled "Carbon pricing – From theory to practice" took place on November 18th 2019 in Berlin.

The aim of the conference was to give the projects of the BMBF funding measure Economics of Climate Change II the opportunity to get to know each other, exchange ideas, define network activities, and discuss the challenges of climate economics research. Aside from a panel discussion with Sylvia Kotting-Uhl (chairwoman Committee on the Environment), Sabine Nallinger (Stiftung 2°), Jakob Schlandt (Tagesspiegel) and Achim Wambach (ZEW) on the expectations of civil society, politics and industry towards science moderated by Karen Pittel (ifo institute), the projects were presented (posters can be downloaded here) and every topic held a workshop discussing project aims, research methods, and overarching goals.

Five forums and one conference were already part of the funding priority Economics of Climate Change I (2011-2015).
