Climate change, digitalization, urbanization, demographic transition - profound changes like these pose new challenges for German and European cooperation with African partners. How do so-called megatrends influence peace and security? Do they strengthen or weaken democracy and the rule of law? How do they affect economic development, social justice and Africa's role in the world?

The new research and advisory project "Megatrends Africa: Implications and Options for Action for German and International Policy" of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) addresses these questions. With the African continent's higher status on the political agenda of Germany and the EU, more evidence-based policy advice is needed. Developments on the African continent and their significance for Africa's international relations need to be researched in a policy-oriented manner. The interdepartmentally funded project provides new impulses for cooperation between Africa and Europe. The aim is to identify opportunities, challenges and perspectives for economic and political cooperation between the two continents.

Within the framework of this event, two experts’ panels will reflect on central guiding questions of the project.
