Motoaki Takahashi is an economist who studies spatial and international economics. He is a member of the Kiel Institute’s trade policy research center and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Mainz.

His research includes a dynamic general equilibrium analysis of the great Black migration: the mass migration of Black Americans from the South to the North in the United States between 1940 and 1970. He is also interested in how nonhomothetic preferences, productivity evolution across sectors, and international trade shape structural change.

He received a Ph.D. degree from the Pennsylvania State University in 2023.
