Industrial Policy LAB Kick-off Workshop
The new Industrial Policy Lab at the Kiel Institute, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, aims to create a platform for developing research-based solutions to key economic policy challenges in Germany and Europe, and to foster exchange between academia, politics, and business.
Industrial policy is experiencing a global renaissance—from China's industrial ambitions to the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act to Mario Draghi’s report on the future of European competitiveness. However, debates around its effectiveness and design are often ideologically driven. We therefore aim to facilitate an open-minded discussion about which industrial policy measures Germany and Europe should take to address current challenges such as weak exports, defense needs, electricity prices, the energy transition, geoeconomic tensions, and the risk of trade wars. Our goal is to bring together academics, policymakers, business representatives, and civil society to develop pragmatic solutions.
