110 Years Kiel Institute - Honoring Gerhard Colm

Gerhard Colm

The Kiel Institute traditionally celebrates its birthday around February 20. This year, in addition to the actual anniversary of the Institute, the focus is on the anniversary of the first Bernhard Harms Prize: 60 years ago, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Institute, the first Bernhard Harms Prize, named after its founder, was awarded. The recipient was Gerhard Colm, who headed the Department of World Economics and International Business Cycle Research (Abteilung für Statistische Weltwirtschaftskunde und Internationale Konjunkturforschung , Astwik) from 1930 to 1933. He and his family were forcibly expelled from the Institute and Kiel in 1933 and found a new academic and private home in the United States. A plaque and portrait now commemorate him at the Colm Room, one of the Institute's meeting rooms, which has been renamed in his honor.
