The authors observe that the share of the maritime economy in global gross value added is forecasted to remain roughly constant in 2030, although there will be sectoral shifts. Offshore wind energy is of particular importance. Here, the OECD expects an increase in gross value added of 25 percent and an increase in employment of 13 percent. Europe will benefit disproportionately from this development, as it will play a pioneering role in electricity generation from offshore wind turbines and their manufacture as well as installation and maintenance. The authors show that in Schleswig-Holstein other maritime sectors dominate the maritime economy compared to Europe. For example, maritime shipping (transport by sea) accounts for 41 percent of turnover, clearly the strongest sector of the maritime economy in Schleswig-Holstein. In Schleswig-Holstein, the success of the specialization and consolidation strategy in shipbuilding was evident from around 2013, when both sales and employment recovered significantly. The authors conclude that the expansion of the specialization to the construction and operation of service and maintenance vessels for offshore wind turbines offers an option to benefit from the strong growth in this sector.
