Excellence Awards in Global Economic Affairs
The aim of the Excellence Award since 2007 is to build a community of the brightest young researchers in the area of global economic affairs. These researchers are to be given intellectual, financial, and administrative support – based on the Kiel Institute’s generous resources – to pursue focused programs of research in designated areas. Economists until the age of 37 (or alternatively within 7 years after the Ph.D graduation) are invited to apply for this award by submitting up to three published or unpublished papers in the area of global economic affairs. Members of the jury, associated with the Kiel Institute, will select the prize winners. The prize winners will be granted the “Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs” at a ceremony at the Kiel Institute.
Young Economists are invited to apply for this award by submitting up to three published or unpublished papers in the field of global economic affairs, and specifically pertaining to the following areas:
- International Trade and Investment
- International Finance and Macroeconomics
- Geoeconomics
- Innovation and International Competition
- Migration
- International Development
- International Political Economy
- Climate Economics
Research Fellowships
- Otto Group Fellowship
- Porsche Fellowship
- Sauer Compressors Group Fellowship
- Theodor Wille and Heinrich-Diederichsen `fair trade´ Fellowship (every 2 years)
The prize winners will receive a Research Fellowship at the Kiel Institute, entitling them to:
- a premium prize-giving ceremony in Berlin/Kiel
- a research visit to the Institute, all expenses paid
- research interaction with the Kiel Institute’s researchers
- research support and superb research facilities
- participation in the Institute’s research events (workshops, seminars, roundtables and PhD courses)

Papers should be submitted as email attachment to excellence-awards@ifw-kiel.de together with a CV that includes the birth date: The deadline for application is Dec. 19, 2024.
Submission of a paper does not preclude publication in the standard outlets. Submitted papers may include coauthored papers. Submitted papers will be evaluated by a jury. The top contestants will be granted the "Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs" at a prize-giving ceremony Berlin/Kiel. In addition, they will receive a Research Fellowship* at the Kiel Institute, entitling them to a research visit to the Institute, all expenses paid. Research Fellows will receive research support and the opportunity to participate in the Institute’s research projects and events.
*Staff members of the Kiel Institute and of the sponsoring organizations are not eligible for the fellowship.
