Advanced Studies Program

Full-Time and Modular

The Advanced Studies Program has been the start of a professional and personal transformative journey for more than 650 successful ASP participants over a 35 years period.  We believe that our courses taught by world-leading economists, the interactions within our multicultural group of participants, and the resources of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy with more than 90 researchers and regular conferences, seminars and events is ideal for your professional and personal development at early stages in your career but not only. Whether just finished your master degree, whether you are working on your dissertation or whether you gathered some professional experience, there is an ASP program tailor-made to your needs.

The Advanced Studies Program selection committee is looking for people who are able to succeed both while in Kiel and also beyond. Beside great academic performance, we value collaborative work, intellectual curiosity, and the desire to be challenged by research and research-based solutions for reliable policies.

Dates and Deadlines

We propose a staged admissions process, with three deadlines on March, 17 2019; March, 31 2019 and April, 21 2019. The Advanced Studies Program starts on Aug. 19, 2019 and ends on May 30, 2020.

Competition for each of the rounds is equal, but the earlier you gain admission, the more time you have to arrange logistics, secure financing, and in particular to obtain a Resident Permit (for Non-EU candidates) and to have a larger choice of rooms in our guesthouse. Note that after the second round, additional scholarships for living expenses are available only via a waiting list.

The next deadline for applications is: March 17, 2019

To enroll for the ASP Modular, you can download and complete our ASP application form indicating the first set of courses that you would like to join from August 2019 to May 2020 in the section “Room for additional remarks”. When this is done, you can contact the ASP team (E-Mail Address protected. Please enable Javascript.) to discuss the enrollment process and see which option fits best your career progression.

Admission requirements for participation are:

A Master degree (or equivalent) in economics or a related field of study;

Proficiency in English as working language.

Applicants are asked to:

  • complete and return the enclosed Application Form;
  • document their university degree (applicants who have not yet completed their university examination, are requested to document the results which they have already obtained);
  • provide a letter of recommendation by a person (university professor, superior in company or institution) who is familiar with the applicant. The letter must be sent by the recommender directly to the Kiel Institute per email to

  • a recent CV
  • The number of participants is approx. 20. Participants will be selected in the light of their personal records. The tuition fee is Euro 8.200.--

Several scholarships cover totally or partially the tuition fee for qualified participants. Few scholarships are offered to talented students in need of financial aid. The latest scholarships cover the tuition fee and include a monthly stipend for living expenses. Potential requests for a scholarship should be indicated in the Application Form.

Select One Course

The Kiel Institute offers the possibility of attending selected courses of its Advanced Studies Program. Participants will have to take care of accommodation themselves (the Kiel Institute can give names and prices of nearby hotels on request). There is no application deadline, but early application is recommended. Students may apply for low-price accommodation at the Institute’s student residence. Participation in course exams is possible (6 credit points for a two-week course, 3 credit points for a one-week course).
