The Cluster for Economic Research on Africa focuses on enterprises and entrepreneurial potential in African markets, trade and investment policy, and issues of macroeconomic development, stability, and public finance. This research will strengthen evidence-based policy advice for German and European Africa policy and also engage and address African partners.

Against the backdrop of fundamental changes in the international order, the Kiel Institute is launching an initiative to foster the production and dissemination of knowledge at the intersection of geopolitics and economics.

The outbreak of COVID-19 could drive Iran into economic and political chaos. US sanctions have substantially weakened the country. Export restrictions, as imposed e.g. by the EU, are now impeding access to urgently needed medical products. Diplomatic tensions might rise and jeopardize cooperation, concerning e.g. the nuclear deal, if the EU hesitates to act.

This conference is the kick-off-event of a new research initiative on “Geopolitics and International Economics” at the Kiel Institute. The conference is co-organized with the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and brings together many of the world’s leading scholars working at the intersection of geopolitics and economics. The conference features 2 keynotes (by Matteo Maggiori and Nancy Qian), 11 academic papers, and 2 high-level policy panels (on China on Monday, and on Europe on Tuesday). Among others, the topics to be discussed include geopolitical risks, the use of sanctions, the politics of economic interdependence, the rise of China, and global technological competition.
