In a dramatic appeal, Ali Babacan, Turkish deputy prime minister and minister of state, told the plenum at the Global Economic Symposium (GES) in Kiel on Wednesday that “we need governments that will sacrifice their own political future for the future good of their countries. We need more kamikaze politicians.” He continued that the world is facing huge problems and thus drastic measures have to be taken to deal with these problems.
“We can no longer think along party lines or in terms of country borders. We need international solidarity,” he said. Further, he said that there are no simple solutions; politicians must give up their personal interests.
The fourth Global Economic Symposium (GES), is being jointly hosted by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the Bertelsmann Stiftung, in cooperation with the German National Library of Economics (ZBW) – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics.
