The Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) will now be collaborating to organize the Global Economic Symposium (GES). The agreement for this long-term partnership was recently signed by Dr. Gunter Thielen, chairman and CEO of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, and Prof. Dennis J. Snower, president of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

According to Thielen, the reason for the new partnership was the Bertelsmann Stiftung's desire to work with IfW to promote international, interdisciplinary dialogue among the political, business, civil society and academic sectors.  The goal of the dialogue will be to examine global challenges and generate ideas for responding to them, Thielen said.

The 2011 Global Economic Symposium, which will be dedicated to the topic "New forces of global governance," will be held on October 4-6 in Kiel. Some 400 political, business, academic and civil society leaders have been invited to attend.

The latest upheavals in North Africa have made clear the role that civil society can play in driving reform. A number of the symposium's events will therefore examine the question of how non-institutional actors can become more active participants in international cooperative ventures and multilateral decision-making efforts.

The Global Economic Symposium 2012 will most probably take place in Rio de Janeiro.
