Kiel Institute Rated among the Leading Think Tanks
Press Release of February 26, 2010
The Kiel Institute for the World Economy has been given the excellent ranking of number 17 among the top 50 non-U.S. think tanks in a study conducted by the International Relations Program of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and entitled “The Global Go-To Think Tanks.”
UPenn assessed 6,305 think tanks throughout the world, 1,912 of which were in North America and 1,750 in Europe, to arrive at a group of 392 finalists. It used a multi-stage process involving surveys of independent scholars and experts from academia, policy making, society and the media to assess the quality and relevance of the activities performed by the think tanks.
The Kiel Institute ranked well not only in the overall ranking. In the special category rankings, the Kiel Institute ranked number 10 among the Top Domestic Economic Policy Think Tanks worldwide. It is the only European think tank ranked in this category: 8 of the other think tanks ranked in this category were U.S. think tanks. In the special category Top International Economic Policy Think Tanks, the Kiel Institute was ranked even better: it was ranked number 7, directly below the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Mass., and three rankings above the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London.
Professor Dennis Snower, the president of the Kiel Institute, commented on these rankings, saying: “We are very pleased that our work has been recognized so highly by experts, by those we advise, and by the media.”
