Wissensakkumulation und Wachstum
Eine der wichtigsten weltwirtschaftlichen Entwicklungen der Gegenwart ist die zunehmende Verlagerung von Forschung und Entwicklung sowie anderer wissensintensiver Aktivitäten aus hochentwickelten Industrieländern in rasch wachsende Schwellenländer („Emerging Economies“). Da neues Wissen langfristig eine der wichtigsten Quelle von Wachstum, Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Beschäftigung ist, ziehen globale Verlagerungen der Wissensproduktion und Veränderungen der internationalen Wissensflüsse globale Verschiebungen von Einkommen und Wohlstand nach sich.
Ziel der Forschung in diesem Bereich ist es, zu einem besseren Verständnis der Determinanten von Wissensentstehung, Wissensausbreitung und wissensbasiertem Wachstum in Industrieländern und Emerging Economies beizutragen. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Rolle des räumlichen, institutionellen und kulturellen Umfeldes, da die entscheidenden Innovations- und Wachstumsdeterminanten in einer globalisierten Welt nicht diejenigen sind, die ubiquitär verfügbar sind, sondern die, die – zumindest temporär – standortgebunden sind.
Die Forschungsarbeit ist in zwei eng verknüpften Projekten organisiert:

| | In diesem Projekt wird untersucht, wie die Ausbreitung neuen Wissens Wachstum und Entwicklung von Unternehmen in hochentwickelten Industrieländern beeinflusst. Schwerpunkte der Forschung liegen auf der Rolle des räumlichen, institutionellen und kulturellen Umfeldes sowie auf den Wechselwirkungen zwischen Internationalisierung und Innovationsfähigkeit. |

| | In diesem Projekt werden Bestimmungsgründe und Muster von Innovation und Wachstum in Schwellenländern, die Auswirkunfen des weltweiten “knowledge sourcing” für Schwellenländer sowie die Akteure und Triebkräfte hinter internationalen Wissensflüssen analysiert. Ein wichtiges Teilprojekt (mit Fokus auf China) wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gefördert. |
Forschungsnetzwerk
Der Forschungsbereich Wissensakkumulation und Wachstum ist Mitglied der folgenden internationalen Netzwerke:
- „DIME“ (Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe). In diesem von der EU finanzierten Exzellenznetzwerk untersuchen Ökonomen, Sozialwissenschaftler und Wirtschaftsgeografen die ökonomischen und sozialen Konsequenzen der fortschreitenden Globalisierung in wissensbasierten Gesellschaften.
- „Megacities-Megachallenge: Informal Dynamics of Global Change“. Dieses von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) finanzierte Schwerpunktprogramm verbindet Ökonomen und Sozialwissenschaftler in Deutschland, China und Bangladesh. Der Forschungsschwerpunkt des Programms liegt auf den Wechselwirkungen zwischen Prozessen des globalen Wandels, insbesondere Prozessen der Wissensakkumulation und Wissensausbreitung, und informellen Institutionen und Prozessen in megastädtischen Systemen.
