Objective
The world’s economic landscape of innovation and growth is undergoing a fundamental change: Important knowledge-intensive activities such as research & development, finance, or headquarter functions show an increasing tendency towards clustering in metropolitan areas. As these agglomerations tend to gain importance as principal engines of innovation and growth there is growing concern that existing regional and international disparities in knowledge potentials, income and growth may widen. Peripheral locations or even whole countries without an outstanding centre may lose competitiveness in knowledge-intensive activities and fall back in economic strength and welfare. Hence, tensions may arise between knowledge-based growth and regional and social cohesion, which would entail major challenges for regional, national, and supra-national policymakers. Against this background, the main purpose of the workshop is to improve the understanding of the micro- and macroeconomic causes and consequences of the ongoing spatial concentration of knowledge-intensive activities from a theoretical, empirical and political perspective.
