The City

The city of Kiel (250,000 inhabitants) is located at the Baltic sea one-hours drive north of Hamburg. A university town since 1665, Kiel is the capital of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and its major service center. Important industries are ship-building, machinery, and electronics.

As "Gate to the North" Kiel provides close links to Scandinavian countries including a regular ferry-service to Norway and Sweden.

In the field of sports Kiel is internationally known for its sailing events and has been twice host to the Olympic Yachting Competitions.During the summer months the surrounding beaches and the pleasant hillside-country offer excellent recreational facilities (swimming, sailing, windsurfing, hiking etc.). In addition, there is a large number of indoor sporting facilities (tennis, squash, pools etc.) also to be used during the winter months.

The city offers a large choice of cultural events (including theatre, concerts, and exhibitions) and good opportunities for excursions to the nearby cities of Hamburg and Lübeck (with its medieval city center) and to the Scandinavian countries.
