Internal Kiel Institute Journal Ranking
The Leibniz Gemeinschaft (WGL) considers one paper in an internationally renowned, peer-reviewed journal per researcher and year as an international benchmark in economics.
The Internal Kiel Institute Journal Ranking is an attempt to identify the best refereed journals that are relevant for the current research program of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. Our journal ranking does not provide a comprehensive list of economics journals since it may not include journals that specialize in fields which do not belong to our present research interests. Our journal ranking may be revised in light of new published ranking information.
The Internal Kiel Institute Journal Ranking is mainly based on a recent study by:

Compared to previous journals rankings, the KY study provides a number of methodological advantages and is based on more recent citation information. We derive our ranking as the average of the "within" and the "policy" ranking by KY, where the "within" ranking only considers citations from economics journals and the "policy" ranking also considers citations from journals in fields like political science, geography, and development studies.
Journals that are not included on the KY list but nevertheless appear to be relevant for our research program are ranked according to the reputation of their editors in terms of publications and their aims and scope.
We identify five categories of journals, according to the following criteria:
