Rural Development

In many developing countries, poverty is still a predominantly rural phenomenon. Therefore, rural development is one of the greatest challenges for many developing economies, in particular in Sub-Saharan Africa, and a key condition for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Rural areas are characterised by a high degree of vulnerability of their inhabitants, e.g. in the face of droughts. Other exogenous shocks, such as diseases or fluctuations of agricultural commodity prices, can also have drastic consequences for the well-being of individual households. Against this background, the Research Area is working on the following projects on rural development:

  • Agricultural premium markets and rural development
In this project we analyze to what extent smallholders in Sub-Saharan Africa are able to realize welfare gains from participating in agricultural premium markets (e.g. fair trade; bio-certification).

  • Welfare effects of the AIDS pandemic
This project analyses the impact of the AIDS-pandemic on the welfare of rural households in selected Sub-Saharan African countries.
