Poverty Reduction, Equity, and Development

With more than 2 billion people world-wide living on less than US$ 2 per day, absolute poverty remains a pressing concern. Halving poverty by 2015 is a key UN Millennium Development Goal. By conducting empirical  research that effectively responds to ongoing policy debates, the group aims to create knowledge that helps developing and transition countries to devise strategies for poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Our research revolves around themes related to the integration of developing and transition countries into the international division of labor. We analyze, for example, how remittances affect inequality in migrant-sending countries, and whether foreign aid contributes to the achievement of the MDGs. Questions arising from the specialization of many developing countries in agriculture and mining constitute another focus of our research.

conference 2009

As a means of furthering international research cooperation and the exchange of ideas between researchers and development practitioners, our research group hosts the Poverty Reduction, Equity, and Growth Network(PEGNet).

As research associates, Aslihan Arslan (FAO, Rome) and Jann Lay (Göttingen University and GIGA Hamburg) are closely related to the research group. Close research cooperations also exist with Clemens Breisinger (IFPRI), Axel Dreher (University of Heidelberg), Dierk Herzer (Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg), Hannes Öhler (University of Heidelberg), Pablo Selaya (University of Copenhagen), and Christoph Trebesch (University of Munich).
